The Fleur de Lis is our adopted symbol which hails from King Louis XIV, The Sun King and is a French word meaning "flower of the lily". The Fleur de Lis symbolizes the French occupation of New Orleans, Louisiana and its territories from 1682-1762. Traditionally the Fleur de Lis represents the French monarchy and signifies life, light and perfection. In Christianity, the Fleur de Lis has also been used to represent the Holy Trinity and the Blessed Virgin Mary. Of course, the NFL New Orleans Saints Professional Football Team is easily identified by its Fleur de Lis emblazoned helmets. This symbol has many references, but in Greater New Orleans, the Fleur de Lis represents the rebirth of our communities following Hurricane Katrina.
